Petrol, diesel, hybrid or electric: running-cost comparison
Put the prices and economy you actually get into the boxes and see what each type of vehicle costs per mile and per week for your driving, including London charges if you want them.
How it works
- Fuel is miles divided by your UK mpg, times 4.546 litres to the gallon, times your price per litre. It is the same sum the cost per mile calculator uses.
- Electric is miles divided by miles per kWh, times your price per kWh. Use your own average across home charging and public chargers.
- Servicing and tyres and other weekly costs (insurance, rental or finance) are yours to enter, so a cheap-to-run car is not flattered by leaving them out.
- London charges are optional. They use the daily Congestion Charge and ULEZ amounts from one data file, last checked 2 October 2026, and the days you enter. See the Congestion Charge and ULEZ estimator for late payment and wheelchair-accessible vehicles.
An estimate, not advice. It uses only the figures you type in and leaves out depreciation, VAT, operator commission and tax. Prices, charges and rules change, so check the TfL Congestion Charge page and your vehicle's real economy before you decide. Your figures are saved only in this browser.
Next: turn the weekly cost into a tax figure with the self-employed tax set-aside calculator, or read the guides on the Congestion Charge and ULEZ.
